I’m calling this piece “Honu, I’ve Got Your Back”. The honus called me very strongly when I used to visit Hawaii. I heeded their calls and am now blessed to be living on the Big Island. While at Black Sands Beach I photographed a honu which inspired me to create this stained glass panel. There is a hand which inconspicuously looks like sand which is on the turtle’s back. The magical part is imagining whose hand is protecting or petting the honu; your answer will change as you change.
The hand gives blessings. This “tool of tools” represents strength, power and protection. At the same time it can mean generosity, hospitality and stability. The Latin word for hand is manifestation, the conduit of power transforming unseen energy into the world of form.
This piece of stained glass art measures approximately 14″ x 9.5″, weighing about 2 pounds. I have included square bevels which will throw prisms throughout the surrounding area when light shines through. I tried to keep the design as simple as possible; however, I did add some scalloped copper foil to the border. The panel hangs from 18″ of chain attached to two hooks soldered to the back of the piece. Care is easy with glass cleaner and a rag.
